Confession of sin

In telling the story of the Lost Son, Jesus describes how the son

“Came to his senses, saying ‘I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’ So he got up and went to his father”

Luke 15:17-20)

We are called to be like this lost Son, returning to God our Father with repentance and faith. Let us confess our sins, praying together.

Heavenly Father,
You have loved us with an everlasting love, But we have often gone our own way, and rejected your will for our lives.
We are sorry for our sins and turn away from them. For the sake of your son who died for us, forgive us, cleanse us, and change us. By your Holy Spirit, enable us to live for you, and to please you in every way, for the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Amen

Jesus tells us of the Father’s response, explaining that

“while the son was still a far way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him”.

Luke 15:20

This is how our Heavenly Father will respond to each of us as we return to him in the same way.

Bible Reading

As we turn to this weeks Bible reading, let’s pray together:

Heavenly Father, give us faith to receive your word, understanding to know what it means, and the will to put it into practice, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

While church is online, we are continuing our series in 1 Corinthians. Our Bible reading is 1 Corinthians 6:1-8:

Lawsuits Among Believers

6 If any of you has a dispute with another, do you dare to take it before the ungodly for judgement instead of before the Lord’s people? ² Or do you not know that the Lord’s people will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases? ³ Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life! ⁴ Therefore, if you have disputes about such matters, do you ask for a ruling from those whose way of life is scorned in the church? ⁵ I say this to shame you. Is it possible that there is nobody among you wise enough to judge a dispute between believers? ⁶ But instead, one brother takes another to court—and this in front of unbelievers! ⁷ The very fact that you have lawsuits among you means you have been completely defeated already. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated? ⁸ Instead, you yourselves cheat and do wrong, and you do this to your brothers and sisters.

Prayers

Let’s pray the Lord’s Prayer together:

Our Father in Heaven,
hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread, and forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the Kingdom, the power and glory are yours, now and forever,
Amen.

Weekly Prayer Points

Through out this week, you might like to pray through our weekly prayer points:

• Pray for those working on a vaccine for the Coronavirus, especially as the trials now move into the human testing phase. Pray for those who are our ‘human guinea pigs’.
• Pray for hospital and medical staff who are on the frontline of this public health crisis. Pray they themselves will be kept from harm.
• Pray for doctors, medical staff, hospital staff and volunteers within our own congregations: David Loke, Tamara Lam, Mina Nelson, Errol Edge, Emily Carpenter, Sandra Barrett, Maxine Andersson, Alicia Sloman, Kai Zhu (if we’ve left out others, sorry! Please let us know, we want to keep them in our prayers). Aged care workers listed below.
• Pray for our own congregations as we enter into a period of not meeting together as we usually do. Pray we may take this opportunity to encourage one another and reach out in new ways.
• Pray for those congregation members who have already lost jobs, or who are looking for work in these uncertain times.
• Give thanks for those who have served as parish officers over the last 12 months, and pray for those elected at last week’s Annual General Meeting, that they might be filled with godliness and wisdom.
• Pray for our missionaries who are potentially facing the same danger as us but in different situations. Pray for their health and for opportunities for them to be of service. Please continue in regular prayer for our dear friends who are now in permanent aged-care facilities, particularly at this time of vulnerability because of the Coronavirus: Eion Miller (Regis Hornsby); Eric Lee (Bowden Brae); Marie Neal, Colleen Jeffries, Jane Putt, (Masonic Towers). Also for Veronica Chao, Katherina Bilko and Robin Edmundson who work in this sector
