Synod Report, Part 3 – Ministry with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples

Synod received a report from a special task force that reviewed the ministry within our diocese with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. Did you know there are 5 specialist ministries located throughout our diocese focused on ministering among Australia’s First Peoples? Two are currently without ministers to lead them. Pray God will provide godly and wise leaders.

The report also promoted a new model for these ministries, pioneered by Macarthur Indigenous Church. This involves the use of a larger block of land in bush setting, with community facilities on site. The report suggested replicating this model at Mt Druitt and Nowra, with a modified model for city-based ministries. The report was adamant that a different model is needed to what is usually found in Anglican parishes.

Finally, Synod challenged local parishes to develop an action plan which seeks reconciliation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, and also called on all church members to learn more about the Uluru Statement from the Heart ahead of the planned referendum.

It looks like each of us will need to do some thinking ahead of some concrete actions in the not-too-distant future.
