Evangelism in word and deed
Recognise the name Nicola McDermott? She is the Australian who won silver in the high jump at last year’s Olympics. She’s also a Christian whose testimony reminds us that words and deeds work together when bringing others to Christ.
Very tall for her age, Nicola had to endure the cruel taunts of other children. But all that changed when she started attending a new school: Green Point Christian College on the Central Coast. “When I walked in, I was immediately met by this overwhelming, non-judging love from the students and teachers”,she recalls. “I was like, ‘What is this?’ They said, ‘We love because Jesus loves us.’ I said, ‘Well, I’m sold’ because I had never experienced a love quite like it.”
When seeking to lead others to Jesus, the message of who he is and what he has done for us is essential. But so too are the loving actions inspired by the message, whether they be the actions that promote Christian unity (as we heard in last week’s sermon), or the acts of kindness and inclusion described by Nicola above. Friends, as others hear of your faith, keep allowing the Spirit to mould your character and actions—people will notice!
