Minister’s letter – Are you starving yourself?

How’s the New Year’s diet going? I gave up making such New Year resolutions a long time ago! But are you starving yourself in another way? Are you starved of God’s Word?

I’ve just finished Amos in my personal Bible reading. One of the punishments God inflicts upon an unrepentant Israel is to withhold his word. God says “I will send a famine through the land— not a famine of food or a thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the words of the Lord” (Amos 8:11). J.I. Packer uses these verses to open his book God has Spoken, suggesting that in our modern age, even in some of our churches, the same God-sent famine has taken hold. “The truth is we have grieved the Spirit, and God has withheld the Spirit. We stand under divine judgment […] For us, too, the Word of God is in a real sense lost”.

Aside from a famine descending upon society and the churches, is it possible we’re starving ourselves of this food? It’s one thing for God to withhold his word, quite another for us to not bother eating in the first place. Next week we begin four sermons in Luke’s Gospel. Could you read through Luke over the coming month? One chapter a day will leave you with days to spare. Let’s sit at the banquet while this food is available. “When your words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my heart’s delight” (Jeremiah 15:16).
