Minister’s Letter – Being an instrument of righteousness.
In our loungeroom we have an electric piano, a relic from a time before children when one of the adults in our house was learning to play. When a skilled pianist sits at the keys the house is filled with wonderful sounds. But when small children who have not yet had lessons switch it on and ‘make music’, the result is an aural insult!
In my personal Bible reading I am working my way through Romans. In 6:13 Paul says “Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness.”
Think of your constituent parts; are they used for wickedness or righteousness? Are your hands used for striking or caring? Is your tongue used for cursing or encouragement? Are your private parts building your marriage or undermining it? Do your feet take you to where temptation abounds, or to where you are encouraged in faith? What of your mind? Is it filled with bitterness or thankfulness?
Viewing your embodied life as an ‘instrument’, is it making wicked or righteous sounds? Jesus has purchased us and installed us in the household of God for a righteous purpose. Pray God might help us fill the home with wonderful music!
