17th Dec 2023 – Minister’s Letter:
Advent is the time in the church calendar when we think of Jesus’ first coming as well as his return. Jesus taught us to pray “Your kingdom come”. At the end of Revelation we read, “’Yes, I am coming soon.’ Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.” Paul writes in Philippians, “Our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Saviour from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.” (3:20-21)
Are you looking forward to Jesus’ return? Do you pray, “Your kingdom come”? Is it something that shapes how you view this life? In Isaiah we have seen God’s promises of a new heaven and a new earth (65:17) and a time when “Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war any more” (2:4), when “They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain, for the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea” (11:9).
What a day that will be when Jesus comes to reign and bring these promises to their fulfilment. The struggles and trials of this world will be gone for ever and we will be with him. Jesus came the first time to show us the way and to die for us so that we might be forgiven and be ready for his return. Are you ready to meet him when he comes to judge this world and to bring his kingdom of peace and joy?
